"The Rio Grande Valley already has one of the highest rates of self-induced abortion in the country. A 2012 survey found that 12 percent of women in clinics near the Mexico border said they had attempted to end their pregnancy on their own before seeking professional help. “They’re getting drugs from Mexico, drinking teas, eating herbs, falling down the stairs on purpose or convincing their boyfriends to beat them up,” Hagstrom Miller says. “Any of those methods could be fatal.”"

The Last Rural Abortion Clinics in Texas Just Shut Down

Conservatives are not reducing abortion. They are reducing safe abortion. The more I read about this, the more I am convinced that conservatives simply hate poor women of color.

Texas hospital says fetus of brain-dead pregnant woman 'not viable,' court docs show

A judge ordered a Texas hospital Friday to remove Marlise Munoz, who is pregnant and brain dead, from life support after the hospital acknowledged that her fetus isn’t viable.

Finally. How horrific.

I don’t know how anyone could have seen a different ending to this terrible story. I hope this spurs the Texas legislature to change this ghastly law. May her family find peace, and may Marlise and her baby finally rest.

Is Ted Cruz Asshole of the Year?

by TeaPartyCat ()

When I think about who we should name Asshole of the Year, I feel like as bad as everyone else was in 2013, it can only be Ted Cruz.

Ask yourself— did anyone work harder for this title? Want it more?

Asshole of the Year is…

A Third Of Texas Women Just Lost The Right To Vote

Stop Texas from passing SB521 that would destroy sex education in the state!

Please sign this petition. Currently there is a bill in the Texas Senate, SB521, that effectively weakens/eliminates sex ed by: A) students will need to opt-in for sex education with a note from their parents two weeks prior to sex ed class B) no abortion providers or anyone associated with abortion providers can teach or be affiliated with learning materials for sex ed such as organizations like Planned Parenthood. This takes power out of the districts hands and makes it a state issue. For more information please click on the link. Please help spread this petition around!

That’s not sex ed, Texas. None for you.

Five Reasons to Care About Texas Abortion Law (and 1 Reason You Don't)

If you do anything, vote.  At least understand where this is going.  Then read The Handmaid’s Tale and flip out.

Supreme Court declines to block Texas abortion law

A split U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to block implementation of a new abortion law in Texas that already has prompted a dozen clinics in the state to stop performing the procedure.

The provision requires doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the facility in case women have complications.

The four liberal members of the nine-member court objected to the decision not to block the appeals court ruling that allows the law to go into effect.

"[T]he injunction meant that abortion clinics in Texas whose physicians do not have admitting privileges at a hostpital within 30 miles of the clinic were forced to cease offering abortions," Justice Stephen Breyer said in his dissent. "And it means that women who were planning to receive abortions at those clinics were forced to go elsewhere – in some cases 100 miles or more – to obtain a safe abortion, or else not to obtain one at all."

White Republican Wins ‘Long Shot’ Election After Leading Voters To Believe He’s Black

A white Republican unseated a 24-year African-American incumbent from office in a surprise election victory that some are saying was racially tinged and deceptive.

Dave Wilson, who KHOU reports is an “anti-gay activist and former fringe candidate for mayor,” is being criticized by his opposition for his campaign that reportedly lead the overwhelmingly African-American, Democratic district to believe he was black.

Saying he was fed up with “all the shenanigans” at the Houston Community College System, Wilson said he came up with the strategy because he knew his chances of winning the election against 24-year Democratic incumbent Bruce Austin were quite thin.

“I’d always said it was a long shot,” Wilson told Houston’s KHOU. “No, I didn’t expect to win.”

Austin described Wilson’s campaign as “disgusting,” referring to Wilson’s use of fliers showing African-American faces and a caption of: “Please vote for our friend and neighbor Dave Wilson.”

Wilson admitted simply using images found on the Internet.

One of the mailers used said that Dave Wilson was “Endorsed by Ron Wilson – a longtime African-American, Democratic state legislator. However, the fine print below the slogan states, “Ron Wilson and Dave Wilson are cousins,” a reference to Wilson’s non-politically affiliated cousin who lives in Iowa.

“He’s a nice cousin,” Wilson told KHOU, suppressing a laugh. “We played baseball in high school together. And he’s endorsed me.”

In response to losing the election by 26 votes, Austin said he was seeking a recount.

“I don’t think it’s good,” he said. “I don’t think it’s good for both democracy and the whole concept of fair play. But that was not his intent, apparently.”

This is one of the most bizarre and oddly disgusting stories I’ve come across in awhile. Electing government officials that reflect the identities which make up a populace is very important because people who have a more similar background to you are more likely to represent your interests. It’s not a small matter. For a white male to run a highly deceptive campaign to become the representative of people whose interests and needs are primarily ignored and exploited to the benefit of whites is outrageous and this Dave Wilson guy seems to be pretty proud of himself. Can’t beat a Black incumbent on your own merit? Lie, cheat, and steal to railroad over them. Exploit the needs and interests of your constituency for personal gain and laugh to your own amusement that you were able to get away with it.

Anti-choicers care so little about people getting abortions that they are willing to lie and KIDNAP FOLKS to harass them with an uninvited lecture and trip to a church to avoid their appointment.

Just holy crap this is ridiculous. These people who need this rides are depending on the kindness of strangers to assist them in a very vulnerable time when they need a lot of help. And anti-choicers want to take advantage of that to push their agenda. I mean, wow. Kidnapping. This shit is straight up illegal.

Thank god there is a vetting process to be approved to provide transportation, but WOW. The stuff that goes through the heads of the antis…disgusting.

Horrifying. If you want to convince people that anti-choicers aren’t against women’s autonomy, MAYBE kidnapping them isn’t the right move. Wow.

All the devils are here, indeed.
